Security Digest Stream: Data Privacy is Expensive and Complicated
February 7, 2023
🌐 Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is facing legal challenges from EU GDPR regulators. They have been fined multiple times, including a recent $400 million fine, but are appealing the penalties.
The privacy concerns surrounding Meta are intricate:
💰 This month, the company has been fined for its methods of obtaining user consent for changes to its Terms of Services (ToS), which has been deemed as forcing users to agree in order to continue using the service.
Additionally, Meta has faced penalties for the handling and usage of WhatsApp data, with privacy advocates claiming that the company uses metadata to target ads, despite Meta's assertions that all WhatsApp messages are encrypted and inaccessible.
Privacy complexities are rapidly increasing, and as new regulations are implemented worldwide, it becomes increasingly challenging for companies to understand and abide by them. To address these issues, here are some universal privacy considerations to take into account:
👉 Transparency: Ensure users are informed of the data collected, storage practices, usage, sharing, and who to contact regarding data concerns.
👉 User Access: Provide users with access to their personal data upon request, as required by regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.
👉 Data Retention: Define clear data retention policies and adhere to them, deleting data once it is no longer necessary for providing the app or service, in accordance with privacy regulations.
